The web has been commenting on the outfits of the world’s most famous corporate lawyer since season 1. Portraed by Gabriel Macht, Harvey Specter epitomizes success, but also a certain elite, his niche: always be better than the rest!
To reflect the character’s personality, the production teamed up with Tom Ford to make Harvey’s bespoke suits (will Gabriel then inherit them for his personal wardrobe? We hope so).
Let’s review those suits:
The cut of the suit isn’t exactly in line with the current trend, as it doesn’t strongly mark the waist, with limited bending. This gives the character more volume and ensures fluidity in his outfits (unlike the Louis Litt character, who adopts an ultra-fitted cut to hide his curves, which breaks at the front as soon as he sits down or raises his arms a little).
The length of the jacket is generous enough to balance the bust and legs well, but again not following the current trend.
Like the jacket, the pants are very comfortable, adopting a rather straight, English-inspired cut with a generous break at the bottom of the leg.
First of all, we immediately notice the wide, sharp notch lapel. It’s an element that enhances the character’s presence and contributes to its charisma. Note the hand-crafted Milanese lapel buttonhole.
The front of the jacket features 2 buttons. Topstitching seems to be systematically applied to the lapel, flaps and sleeve slits. This has the effect of holding the edges of the jacket more securely, particularly at the notches.
The front pockets are straight with 5cm flaps, and a ticket pocket with flap completes the look.
The sleeve head (at the break between arm and shoulder) is English-inspired, with a substantial roll (also known as “Padding” or “Con rolino”) highlighting the shoulders and perfectly matching the sharp lapel.
Harvey is not a fan of belted pants: he wears pants without belt loops, with mechanical tightening on the sides. The pockets, on the other hand, are classic (Italian).
Playing the role of a cold-blooded business lawyer, Harvey usually wears dark colors, sometimes patterned, but nothing too eccentric. Here’s a selection of fabrics perfectly suited to a Harvey Specter suit project:
Ties are, in my opinion, the only item on which Harvey allows himself a little fantasy. They usually come from Tom Ford, Zegna, Armani or Canali.
The breast pocket usually houses a pocket square.
